Common Hull Shapes on Boats and Ships

Naval architects have designed some crazy looking boats and they will continue to push forward with topside design principals. The hull, on the other hand, is well refined and needs a little tinkering. Hydrodynamics research is driven by supercomputers in the modern world, but the old refined designs originally built by eye and scale models are proving to be very efficient without the help of computer chips. These three shapes are most common. Displacement This is, of course, the classic boat hull shape. It is by far the oldest and most used hull in history. The reed barges of ancient Egypt were floating on the River Nile thousands of years ago. The main feature of this hull is its deep and mostly symmetrical shape. The measurement of hulls is expressed as deadrise, which, in the simplest terms is the angle and distance a portion of the hull rises to meet the deck. This kind of hull usually only has one chine. Tugboats are good examples of a displacement hull since much of the hull is submerged. Cargo vessels also use this shape since the increased buoyancy allows them to carry more weight. The tradeoff is there is also a lot of drag because so much of the hull is below the waterline when underway. The displacement hull is also a very stable platform because of the low center of gravity and weight of displacement vessels. A high center of gravity makes a vessel more unstable but slower to roll from side to side. Displacement hulls roll less but make the trip back and forth much more quickly. Semi-Displacement Semi-Displacement hulls are a hybrid between displacement hulls and planning hulls. The dead rise from the bow to midship would resemble a displacement hull, deep with a tall bow with a wide beam. The deadrise from midship back to the stern would have a shallow bottomed V shape and could be practically flat at the stern. It would also be narrower than the bow and have much less freeboard. These hulls are common on small and medium-sized vessels with a few exceptions. The U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship group is one larger example. It is a high-speed shallow draft vessel that nearly planes at full speed. The benefits here are higher speed capabilities since the forward portion of the vessel lifts from the water at high speeds. At rest or at lower speeds the vessel behaves more like a displacement hull. Many military applications use this design for medium-sized vessels since it is very versatile. The shallow deadrise of the stern gives exceptional prop clearance. In some cases, the forward hull has a deeper draft than the propellers. The drawbacks are a wet ride at the rear of the boat since there is little freeboard. Plus using these boats in some conditions can lead to a very rough ride. High speed over chop is not the Semi-displacement hull’s strong point. Some designs incorporate multiple chines to give a sort of stepped hull that has sweet spots for intermediate speeds Planning A planning hull has little draft. In the water, the vast majority of the hull will be above water. Think of every recreational boat you have ever seen and there is your planning hull example. The hull shape is widely used outside of the recreational boat industry by builders who want a fast and efficient hull. Fast patrol boats are common in military roles around the world and almost all designs are planning hulls. The planning hull skips over the water and at speed, it will only be in contact with the surface at the stern. At this attitude, it has very little drag from the hull. A hull of this design uses multiple chines to lift the hull clear of the water very quickly. The deadrise at the stern is shallow except for the area near the keel. This small but relatively deep V shape give a planning hull good turning characteristics at high speeds. Drawbacks are low carrying capacity and quick and frequent rolling when at rest in even slightly rough waters.

Exercise Oxygen Consumption ( Epoc ) - 1364 Words

Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) also known as â€Å"after burn† is described as an increase in the rate of oxygen intake, designed to eliminate the oxygen debt after intense activity or exercise. EPOC is the explanation for a person having trouble getting their breathing right again after running on a track. The increase of oxygen consumption also results in an energy expenditure increase that contributes to the overall metabolism increase of an exercise bout. There are many researches that show the different effects on EPOC by the types of exercise, gender, and body composition of their participants. In this article, EPOC following multiple effort sprint and moderate aerobic exercise led by Jeremy R. Townsend wanted to examine the effects of multiple efforts of sprint interval exercise (SIE) and moderate aerobic exercise (MA) on EPOC (Townsend,1). To test this study, six recreationally-trained males at an average of 23 years old each with an average body mass o f 81.8kg and an average height of 6.3 cm each were recruited. To qualify for this study they had to take a physical activity readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q). They were all briefed on what the study consisted of. To start the procedure, the participants appeared to the laboratory at separate times. First they had to familiarize themselves with investigators, instruments, and instructions of the tests. Take a look at The pepsi cola company for example. They have Diet Pepsi and Pepsi max, which are both just sugar-free low calorie versions of the Original Pepsi. Consumers are more likely to purchase products from a brand that they connect with, and companies are always searching for ways to create strong emotional brand connections with their consumers. One way to accomplish this is to match the brand’s personality with the consumer’s self. This is driven by the fact that these connections lead to higher levels of consumer loyalty, which then increases the companies financial performance. Consumers with particular personality traits often like to see similar traits amongst their favorite brands. According to the five-factor model there is five dominant traits found in human personality, including: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. A consumer’s personality is often a combination of these traits, with some being more principal than others. The traits found in the five-factor model have been shown to impact consumer behaviors such as buying, bargaining, compulsive shopping and even commitment to environmentally friendly products. A Critical Approach To Barn Burning (by William Essay Example For Students

A Critical Approach To Barn Burning (by William Essay A Critical Approach To Barn Burning (by William Faulkner)Barn Burning is a sad story because it very clearly shows theclassical struggle between the privileged and the underprivileged classes. Time after time emotions of despair surface from both the protagonist and theantagonist involved in the story. This story outlines two distinct protagonists and two distinctantagonists. The first two are Colonel Sartoris Snopes (Sarty) and his fatherAbner Snopes (Ab). Sarty is the protagonist surrounded by his fatherantagonism whereas Ab is the protagonist antagonized by the social structure andthe struggle that is imposed on him and his family. The economic status of the main characters is poor, without hope ofimproving their condition, and at the mercy of a quasi-feudal system in NorthAmerica during the late 1800s. Being a sharecropper, Ab and his family had toshare half or two-thirds of the harvest with the landowner and out of theirshare pay for the necessities of life. As a result of this status, Ab and hisfamily know from the start what the future will hold hard work for theirlandlord and mere survival for them. No hope for advancement prevails throughout the story. Sarty, hisbrother and the twin sisters have no access to education, as they must spendtheir time working in the fields or at home performing familial duties. Nutrition is lacking He could smell the coffee from the room where they wouldpresently eat the cold food remaining from the mid-afternoon meal (PARA. 55). As a consequence, poor health combined with inadequate opportunity results inlow morale. A morale which the writer is identifying with the middle class ofhis times that same quality which in later years would cause his descendants toover-run the engine before putting a motor car into motion (PARA. 20)The Snope family manages to survive and find work. However, the workoffers little other than a chance for survival I reckon Ill have a word withthe man that aims to begin tomorrow owning me body and soul for the next eightmonths (PARA 40). Like nomads they were forced to move constantly. Due toseasons and crop rotation, in order to secure work they had to reserve land withdifferent landowners. Abs emotional instability is a predominant factor contributing to hiserratic behavior throughout the story. The family has moved a dozen times fromfarm to farm, and at times forced to forfeit their agreement with the landlorddue to Abs unacceptable behavior. A behavior which throughout the story istransformed into a rebellion, by Ab smearing the landowners carpet with horsemanure and then suing him for charging him too much for the damage. These actssymbolize frustration with the system and a radical approach to rebel against it. Knowing that punishment could not be avoided when committing such acts, Absactions take on a more dramatic meaning as if he is trying to convey a message. He is aware of the economic injustice and he must respond even at the risk ofhim and his family being prosecuted or ostracized. Abs constant rebellion is displayed by a rough, sour character andexemplified when he burns his landlords barn down. He feels despair and loss, and inflicts damage to whomever he happens to be working for. Although the story centers on the feelings and thoughts of Abs youngestson Sarty, the economic implications of his entire family play a vital role injustifying (not condoning) his fathers behavior, which is the pivotal reasonfor Sartys controversial feelings on which the whole story is based. .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .postImageUrl , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:hover , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:visited , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:active { border:0!important; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:active , .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9 .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uddc6a6ddf66ba0372aa1ef3ac663d8e9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Family Values: Importance EssaySartys main dilemma is his loyalty to his family which collides withhis disappointment and suppressed dislike of his own father. The storys emotional turns are clearly defined by Sartys thoughts andAbs actions. Sartys dilemma and Abs frustrations continually grab the reader, serving up a series of emotionally laden dilemmas: Given the circumstances ofthe story, is Abs barn burning justified? Should Sarty tell the landlord thatAb was responsible for burning down the barn? Is the outdated sociological Blaming the Victim theory valid? Is the lose-win arrangement betweensharecropper and landowner a morally acceptable one?Burning a barn or any act
